Science does a stellar job of explaining the tectonic plates under ground as the reason how the earth quakes, but cannot explain the source of ‘why.’ Sure, the limited wisdom of man may attempt to say ‘why,’ but cannot do so adequately apart from God. As a matter of fact, he fails miserably and completely.
It is quite a fascinating thing to ‘feel the earth move under my feet,’ and if there be a Creator, one would think he would have said something about it. Oh wait, he did. When the earth first quaked, it was recorded (no, not in the 1700’s) thousands of years ago, as the man of God said:
‘But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.’
Of course, not only did the earth split wide, but a man and his family and everything that belonged to them went down below as the earth closed back up. God as the owner of all that is, proved that quakes belong to Him, and He is well aware and sees all the shaking fists of mankind. Do not confuse his lack of action today with His indifference.
There is this thing called grace, while at the same time the whole creation groans. Only God could orchestrate the two marvels. But earthquakes. A natural display of spiritual truth, that in any age, the Creator of life has an interest and keen eye on the affairs of earth. A mere clearing of the throat as it were, this little quake; a hiccup, an opportunity to open the eye and listen with the ear.
So the word of God admonishes there will be earthquakes in many places. Yes, in the United States, a place kinda irrelevant at the writing of scripture. Quakes in places one would not expect; quakes across the world. Sure they are expected in the middle east……………..really? Why? There is a stirring in the heavenlies, more so today than yesterday, more so tomorrow than today; indeed there must be an accounting and a point when time ceases to be.
And behold, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.
Uh oh. The clearing of the throat has become a bit more pronounced, but man does not care. A lifetime of sunrises, rain, heat, snow, rainbows, life, death, sorrow, pain, the wonder of the fingernail, hearts, lungs, eyes, ears, tongues, memories, and ten thousand other proofs have all gone unnoticed as man asks for one more proof that God is.
What do you want a personal invitation? Oops, got that too. One would think though, that even the most sober minded of seismologists would take another and closer look at WHY the earth quakes, and come to agree: ‘in the beginning God…’
The presence of God should give us the shakes, as He is higher than the heavens, but became the lowliest of all. The crushing and death of the son of God was far more intense than any earthquake or flood; as a matter of fact, it was the entire wrath of God unleashed against sin and ALL ungodliness. Yea, a thought worth quaking over.

Did you also miss the part about the SOURCE of the why?
And it appears you have missed the spirit of the post completely, for you were mute as to reason WHY the earth quaked in the first place.
You will never understand without the help of the spirit of God; it’s not an insult, it’s just true.

Sure it is arch, go ahead and believe that earthquakes are NORMAL natural events. Yes, just as normal as presto, man appearing accidentally and without design or purpose.
God’s word answers it all, from the naming of these creatures called Man and Woman to the ‘natural display’ of hailstones, or the effulgence of a rainbow, or as written here, quakes. God’s word shuts every mouth. It is not a bad thing to have the mouth sealed shut before He who is.

Good post, ColorStorm, this and the other about birth pangs.
I’ve been in a couple of earthquakes and they are amazing and wonderful, not unlike the One who made them. Naturally I survived and so did everyone else, so I am free to praise and delight in the experience. About 15 yrs ago I had a good shaking, trying to hold a baby and groceries, while hanging onto the car that rocked back and forth. We all tumbled onto the grass. The ground actually rippled like waves and the street rolled. My husband was up two stories on a ladder at work, so he really got a bird’s eye view. He didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I did.

Living in Baja California, we had six or eight earthquakes every year. After you’ve seen one chandelier swing, you’ve seen ’em all.

LOL! I cannot even imagine what it must be like to be so nonchalant and jaded one cannot even allow ones self to be impressed by a power obviously so much greater than oneself.

I’m impressed too insanitybytes at the reaction by nature. When the tsunami hit Indonesia, it was said the animals fled for higher ground, long BEFORE there was news of its arrival.
Apparently, they felt the ‘whole creation groaning.’ Some time ago I was in Cleveland, and sensed something as in a ‘wave’ of pressure that was palpable, but nothing moved. The next day, we heard there was a ‘soft’ quake 600 miles away. I knew something was amiss.
But the ladder? Yikes, could have been far worse, and thank God you did not have to deal with a bouncing baby. I suppose people’s perception of things would change in an instant if the earth clave beneath their feet.
But why wait………………………

Thank you ColorStorm for this encouraging post. All of these quakes are gearing up for that massive one that will hit this earth right before the return of Christ when the heavens and the earth are disrupted and Christ pours out His wrath upon this planet. I will be one of the many coming with Him to set up His kingdom on this earth. Praise God that the earthquake at His death, that victory over sin, death and the devil, will be repeated at the end of the tribulation when Satan is cast into the bottomless pit and the anti-Christ, the false prophet and all those who followed them are cast into the lake of fire that burns forever. Praise God for His mercy given to us through His Son Jesus Christ.
