It’s just a little lie right?

The 3-year-old kid has a mouth dripping with chocolate while holding the candy bar behind his back- Mom says: ‘Did you take the chocolate?’ Junior looks at the ground then at her and says ‘noooooo Mom.’

No big deal right? Just a small fib. But WHY does Junior feel the need to cover up his enjoyment? Thousands of reasons no doubt, but I have the better question which reveals so much more.

Who taught him to lie having never had a lesson?

Which brings me to this. The good ladyinsanitybytes22 https://insanitybytes2.wordpress.com/2022/09/09/humility-is-strength/comment-page-1/#comment-141390

wrote a post re. pride and humility, which naturally brought excellent comments, with some including the trappings of Satan. That’s a direction of travel so few dare to go, and maybe rightly so, but nonetheless, the conversation guarantees loaded thoughts from many fronts.

Back to lies. Satan is a liar. He is the father of lies. Ouch. So Junior inadvertently honoured the age-old master by doing something that comes natural, something that dairy cows or eagles cannot do. Something distinctly human. Lying is proof of the human condition, a twitch in the system, a hiccup as it were, a built-in form of protection.

Remember Abraham lied re. Sarah by saying she was his sister? Some say his faith was weak by not trusting God to protect him by simply telling the truth. You decide. But there is something far greater to consider, and that concerns God. Can He lie? Does He hide the chocolate behind His back to protect His image? Should He lie to protect weak people from themselves?

Satan is a liar. God is TRUTH. His WAY is light not darkness. There is no darkness at all in God the Father of lights. Simply put, there is a huge difference between being able to lie, and choosing not to…………and……..being unable to lie. Do we get this?

God. Cannot. Lie. It is not in His makeup; it is not in His backbone. It is not in the Constitution of the throne of heaven. There is no lie which dwells in Light. God cannot lie. Do I need to point out the singular text that proves this, or is the entire warp and woof of scripture enough?

God is not able to lie. He cannot choose NOT to lie as if there was tension in a choice. God is impeccably perfect, and furthermore, the Lord Jesus Christ exemplified truth at every turn, and because of this, found a final resting place on that central tree. ‘Away with him.’ The light of truth is too penetrating, so much so, that even Pilate muttered under his breath: ‘what is truth……………………’ as if it were a passing though of irrelevance, not even noticing that the Truth was mute before him.

Is it any wonder that we read: ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. But we understand why Junior tried to cover his tracks, don’t we…

  1. Junior covered his tracks because he didn’t want to get a well deserved spanking. And why did Mom leave chocolate out were greedy, avaricious little Junior could get his hands on it?

A kid being a kid and a mom being a mom are no reason for Bible thumping.

Not sure i understand your last sentence. The contrast is between humans where lying comes natural, and God where lying is impossible.

But junior and mom are both to blame? Sorry no. The chocolate simply proved what was latent all along. If not chocolate then something else.

      • Great Lion, lying is natural to Junior because he is a brat. Lying is natural to Nancy Pelosi and Brandon because they are evil.

Are you sure that Nancy Pelosi and Brandon are not behaving like very disciplined and selfish brats?

Think of what happens to a brat who never truly learns to love anyone except himself.

        • Brats, by definition are undisciplined. It is the responsibility of mom and dad to turn their brats into men and women. Pelosi and Brandon are senior members of an organized crime syndicate called the US Senate. Crime bosses have their own set of rules which must be followed strictly, or else.

So, Pelosi and Brandon are disciplined to follow a different set of rules, rules which in effect amount to saying everything is mine? Sound like old brats to me.

        • Crime syndicates operate within boundaries. Our political establishment divided up the territory among its factions long ago and until President Trump happened along, they were very disciplined. Then they went insane. To call the inmates of the Brandon lunatic asylum brats, is an insult to brats everywhere.

So, Pelosi and Brandon were raised by crime syndicates? And these people want to raise our kids? There are ways to spoil a child without sparing the rod, I suppose.

        • Yes, crime families are generational. And much to their chagrin, a Hunter Biden, a grown brat, pops up to threaten the entire operation.

  2. A sound point, Colorstorm. Lying is innate to humans, even a normal part of child development, around 3 or four I think. Really funny, some two year olds can lie but they are all confused and baffled by their own lies. They don’t even understand why they are doing it. We call it the “terrible twos,” because they are still honest enough to be all frustrated by the discovery of their own behavior.

You are correct too, God cannot lie because it is not within His nature. His word is golden, His ways are cut and dry, there is nothing but truth there. And whom the Son sets free, is free indeed!

Thanks for the kind mention, too.

I like that in that children are honest in their lying!! They dont know enough to be deceptive- so they gave an excuse, still it’s wrong, so why do adults never grow up with their professional manipulations.

Indeed though, God who CANNOT lie- it’s not that He chooses not to. He can’t. Which makes Him so much higher than man- but still- we are called to that higher place- I so like that in Him- there is no darkness- at all-AND we are in Him.

Taking it further- we ( as u allude) have His Word on it. Scripture is soooooo good. I trust the science of God for example- over 10 thousand Nyes, Tysons, take your pick.

U b welcome too re. any mention.

John, I’m trying to wrap my brain around that statement… “God cannot…”. It’s almost like Peter rebuking Jesus when he said he would be crucified “… No, Lord..”. The two words don’t seem to go together. Like Civil War, Jumbo Shrimp… “God cannot…”. I think you may have overstated your point to say God is “limited” in His Ability, rather than by His “Practice”. I would say God CAN… He isn’t limited in His Ability to “lie” or tell untruth, or “decieve” for His own purposes or plans. But His “Practice” to to be Truthful and He “Does Not” lie as a part of His Nature and His Overall Will. I may be misypunderstanding you though or reaching for straws. -Barabbas

          Well, there is this:

‘In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began…’

From the good book of Titus, as well as Hebrews which confirms: it is impossible for God to lie….

Goes to the larger point regarding His word. He made the stars…… well, maybe not….. He made great whales……. well, maybe not……. Hr guarantees a new heaven and a new earth…… well, maybe not……. male and female created He then…… well, maybe not.

Once you admit that God CAN lie, it naturally follows his promises are suspect. There is no rust in gold. There are no defects in God Himself. He cannot lie.

          But Tkx bar for commenting-

1 kings 22. Did or did not God “send a lying spirit” to deceive the prophets… for His purposes? Book or job, since that’s where the conversation started, did or did not God allow job to think the destruction of His Life and the death of his family was God’s doing, or did he “share with the class” the deal He and Satan had going? God can, and has been “deceptive” for His own purposes throughout the OT.

You cannot correctly charge God by using your terms. God cannot lie. Scripture says so. His ways are perfect. Always.

Satan is deceptive. Joseph’s brothers were deceptive. God is not deceptive.

God sends a lying spirit? So what. He could have done more by smiting them. God gives what people want or need.

Your language implies if God was on trial, the jury would find Him guilty of malfeasance. Sorry. Never. Sitting in judgement of Him is not too smart.

I think ColorStorm is giving you the conventional interpretation of scripture (see https://www.gotquestions.org/can-God-lie.html). That statement leaves me a bit flummoxed too. How do we explain such a thing? How do we explain the Trinity? We accept it; we don’t explain it. We cannot explain it. We don’t know enough.

There is another question, also quite perplexing. How is it we can and do lie? Even when we know it is wrong, we still lie? How is it that we when lie, and we know that lying is wrong, that we still tell lies, even though we know lying is wrong? How is it that a wee child will tell lies and know that lying is wrong before anyone has taught him or her about lying?

I really think that settles it CT/ and it was great to see that whoever put that writing together agrees with my assertion that God is simply above all-

The whole idea of Him choosing Not to lie- implies He could succumb to a defect or that there is an asterisk in His ways. impossible.

  3. I think there can be sometime be some confusion as to what constitutes “lying.” Is it lying to conceal a matter? Not always, no. We conceal things from children for their own protection. The concealment is not for the purpose of deception. We are protecting them from having to cope with something they are not emotionally prepared to deal with. We might conceal gossip we heard from the target, because sharing it would serve no good purpose. We keep some things concealed for the sake of modesty, privacy. Mary treasured things in her heart.

When we people lie we aren’t just trying to conceal a matter, we’re often trying to alter the very nature of reality itself to force an outcome we find more pleasing or more self serving.

So you are absolutely right Colorstorm, God cannot lie because lying is not even a part of His nature. He has the power to speak things into existence. If God were to tell us Zebras had spots, they would all suddenly have spots. So it is not that He “cannot” lie, due to some limitation, it is because He is the origin of truth, He is the standard. If He tells you you can walk on water, than water can now be walked on.

      Excellent. Concealing things is multilayered.

‘It is the glory of God to conceal a matter- the honor of kings to search it out.’ Who would dare challenge God here as if His actions were questionable?

But we make mistakes when we bring Him down to our level of understanding. We are not perfect. Better to try to see things from His point of view.

Where were you when I created great whales? Yeah, I’m not so great after all. So, back to the humility thing…….
