Since life itself is apparently not sufficient, I asked a fella what proof would convince Him of God’s being, and he said this:
‘It’s hard thing to prove, although I suppose conjuring a thunderstorm in the Antarctic winter would be a good show of proof. So is he shows up. Teleports me to the Antarctic in winter and creates a thunderstorm, I will be adequately impressed with the that entity’s power. As far omniscience such a being should have amazing predictive powers. To prove omniscience I would like detailed prediction of events that have not happened. Detailed in both space and time. Such a being who can convince me that they can bend the laws of physics to their will, and have a great enough understanding of the laws of physics to predict events before they happen will make me a believer in God.’
Translation: I want God to be my butler. Translation: The creature wants to be personally served by the Creator.
And rest assured, if the thunderstorm appears in the Antarctic, there will be another reason, another excuse, and once more God will be booted from His own existence.
But truth be told, God has already served man; He has gone lower so that men would pay attention. Since God created space and time, He can certainly ‘bend’ it. If stilling the raging seas with a simple word is bending, so be it. If giving ears to the deaf is bending the laws of physics, so be it. If administering sight to a man born blind who has never seen the color blue is bending the laws of physics, so be it. If an iron head floating is bending the laws of physics, so be it.
God has said enough to the hearts of men. His word is good. But didja catch that little snub toward God: ‘I will be adequately impressed…………..’
Really now? So a dazzling display of the stars above on a cloudless night is not impressive? The splitting of the heavens by lightning is not impressive? The majestic sound of thunder is not impressive? The sight of a woman’s face who just gave birth is not a wordless display of one so impressed at life? The sight of an eagle soaring without breaking a sweat is not impressive?
What then? Need I speak of the blood of man or the blood of animals to further prove how the Creator impresses? The stomachs of a cow? The perfectly distanced eyes of a ram, or the bleat of a lamb; their wool to comfort them and us? The pin drop sound at the funeral of a loved one?
Romeo oh Romeo let me count the ways God impresses.
Is not nature impressive enough? How dare we strut our arrogance like a peacock and ask God to prove that which has long been settled!
And let’s not ignore the obvious. The ability of one blogger to stir the conviction of another blogger, across the miles and having never met. Such is the worth, power, and evidence of the living God who uses people to testify of his goodness.
But if life itself is not proof that God is; if ANY thunderstorm is not sufficient……..if the predictive powers of scripture are ALREADY not enough…………if ALREADY proven laws of physics being bent are not enough…………..then most certainly, a personal invitation at your doorstep will be summarily dismissed quicker than you can say Ms. Clinton is the greatest woman who ever lived, but wait, we have that personal invitation already.
Oh how the true God of heaven and earth has foretold the rebellion of men. Men close blind eyes at the butterfly which was not; they look the other way at the neck of the giraffe; they avoid seeing the reality that like begets like, such as the baby elephant or baby lion cub.
And without the care of the Creator for the created, there would be nothing, no-one to care for the young who would die by the wayside. A baby robin in the nest would starve to death without mom bringing the daily worm.
And men woefully cry for God to impress them? Ha. If Aaron and the law are scorned, if the family of Noah was mocked, if Ruth was said to be delusional, if Paul the apostle was thought to have brain damage, if nature and its glory are ignored, is there any real chance that such people could be impressed by God? Hardly.
The Lord said it well: if they do not believe the writings of Moses, neither will they believe if one rose from the dead. The scriptures are impressive enough, and speak quite eloquently of the One who impresses. No bus ride needed to the Antarctic necessary.
But belief in God? Ha, this is far too easy. Now a Redeemer? Still easy, but it takes a bit more effort. Remove the pride and there you have it.

Several times I have had the privilege to teach a college class on World Religions. In our last session before the final exam, I sometimes invited the class to discuss what the true God would need to do to convince people that his religion is right and the others are wrong. Whenever one student would suggest an impressive miracle, others would say, “No, that wouldn’t be convincing, people would think it was fake.” Also, “Every religion would claim that their God had performed the miracle.” Now if Confucius or the Buddha or Muhammad came back from the dead, those students might have a point. J.

“I will be adequately impressed…”
This strikes me as kind of funny. Trust me, upon encountering God, you will be “adequately impressed.” 🙂
It is in His mercy that He often provides us with some very gentle reminders of His presence, and some soft and delicate miracles for us to ponder, things like the sunrise, breathing, our heartbeat.
Someone once told me, “I’ll believe when an angel appears before me,” and it made me laugh too because I thought, what’s the point? You’d just faint dead away and be unconscious for the whole experience anyway. Then you would immediately try to rationalize it, I’m just hallucinating, probably a brain tumor, perhaps I’m having some temporal lobe issues…. There comes a time for everyone however, when our own understanding will fail us and we will suddenly find ourselves “adequately impressed.”

As I am certain you know, the religious leaders asked Jesus for a sign more than once. Here is my favorite reply.
He gave them their sign, and they still did not believe.
We have our miracles. To prove God exists, we have Creation. We have a hole in our hearts only God can fill. To prove Jesus is God, we have the history of the Jews. We have the history of Christianity. We have the Bible.
We have the proof that fella says he wants, but he is probably too busy worrying about Global Warming.

1. God is not an ‘it.’
2. ‘All you have is the words of men?’
-Uh sorry, this is not ALL I have.
3. There is only One deity that matters, the one, true, and only living God, with whom all men have to do.
Scripture confirms this. Nature testifies to this. Your conscience needs no help from the ‘words of men,’ to know that in Him we live, and move, and have our being. God owns the title deed to the earth, so without recognizing this, men are but trespassers on another’s property.
There is no argument on this. No trespassing.

2: I disagree, the Bible; written, translated and edited by people. Claims for visions and miracles, all written and claimed by people. Do you have anything that’s not the words or works of people?

So what that it was written by people. That’s the beauty of its preservation. That is the seriousness of the scribes who attended to something not theirs!
They wrote what they were inspired to write. Prophecy is enough proof. They is a cohesion and consistency unlike any other book on earth. Of course, after all it is the word of God.

At the end of the day, when you have nothing but your conscience to argue against, God is ever God, and the complaints of men are a dime a dozen.
God’s word is good, very good; we? eh, not so much.
Cohesion and consistency? Oh yeah. By the way, the atheist is the greatest proof that scripture is true. God wrote all about it……..

Yes excellent. I have mentioned something similar about the reality of the image in the camera not yet developed.
It’s there, certainly. And the photographer is assured of its existence, even though he can’t see it, and he proceeds, by faith, to enter the darkroom.
But God offers more ‘proof’ and exposes our useless complaints.
